Malawi has refused to pay for the Malawi national team’s travelling expenses for the Rugby World Cup, even as the team continues to play in Africa.
In a statement to TalkSport on Wednesday, the country’s Rugby Football Union (RFU) said it would not pay any of the Malawian team’s costs of accommodation and meals, including the team’s hotel room.
“The RFU is of the view that, since the RFU has no contractual obligation to pay, the RFUs decision is not binding and does not apply to Malawi,” the statement said.
It added that the RFUS had not been consulted about the RFAs decision.
Malawi Rugby Federation spokesman Ewen Radebe told Reuters news agency that the team was not informed about the decision.
The RFUs statement came as the Malawsa Rugby Federation, a body that represents all Malawi’s professional rugby clubs, was preparing to make a decision on the validity of the RFF’s decision.
“We are waiting for the RFUF to make its decision and we will inform all the clubs and the media of its decision when it is finalised,” Radebesaid.
