Chinese President Xi Jinping was joined by his son-in-law and top adviser Jared Kushner at a gala dinner in Los Angeles on Thursday night for what the Chinese press said was a dinner for his son, President Donald Trump.

Trump had been on a trip to China, but Xi said that it would be his son who was hosting the event.

The dinner is a private event that Xi did not attend, according to a report by Bloomberg.

The two sides did not agree on how much to spend on the evening’s entertainment, and it was unclear whether Trump had spoken to Xi or his wife, Peng Liyuan.

Trump also was not present at the dinner, but he was photographed with his wife Melania at the event, which was hosted by the Chinese government.

On Thursday, Trump tweeted that he was glad to host a dinner hosted by his sons but it was a “very special dinner for my son.”

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
